Nightshade
Bittersweet nightshade
or Solanum dulcamara
lurks along creeks and wetlands
and the edges of fields
with its dark green leaves on slender vines
accented by star-shaped purple flowers
with stamens rising to a prominent yellow cone
followed by egg-shaped berries
ripening from green to orange to bright red.
What a pretty poison.
