Twisted Lace Lady

The Lace Lady is the dwarf form of Robinia pseudoacacia, a hardwood deciduous tree also known as the black locust. In The Jungle Garden, Philip Oostenbrink says it is the plant most talked about in his garden when it is opened to the public.

“All parts of it are twisted, from the branches to each individual leaflet on the feathered leaf… The smaller ones which are grown as shrubs are ideal for pots or at the top of a retaining wall, whereas the full standard sizes will grow into a small tree for the middle or rear section of a border.”

Native to North America, this plant thrives in full sun to dappled shade and is hardy down subzero temperatures.
