Looking Into Adaptogens

Adaptogens are herbs, tubers and mushrooms believed to be beneficial to human health. Many have been used for centuries, particularly in Asia and India, to help balance hormones, fight fatigue and depression, and boost the immune system. Western medicine has been slow to fully investigate their effectiveness, but there is growing recognition that they are non-toxic and especially helpful in dealing with stress.

In this book, registered dietician Melissa Petitto introduces adaptogens, surveying their traditional uses and modern applications. She explains how to use them safely and effectively as a preface to a directory of over fifty adaptogens.

The directory presents each adaptogen with a full page color photo and details on its history, health benefits, safety concerns, and recommended dosages. The adaptogens are arranged alphabetically by their Latin names, from Adansonia (Baobab) to Withania Somnifera (Ashwagandha).

Petitto’s book includes recipes for drinks, soups and sauces, and desserts like Coat-My-Throat Licorice Latte, Muscle-Building Yam Soup and Enhance My Athletic Performance Truffles.
