The Ruins of Ephesus

Ephesus: Legends and Facts by Dr. Cemil Toksoz. Ayyildiz Matbassi, 1968.

Founded on a fertile coastal plain in Western Anatolia, Ephesus was an important religious centre in the ancient world, hosting a powerful goddess cult and the Temple of Artemis in pagan times and later, a centre of Christianity with churches dedicated to the Virgin Mary and St. John. According to the Council of Ephesus in 431, Mary spent her final years and died in Ephesus.

This book provides a guide to the ruins of Ephesus as they stood fifty years ago with drawings and photos and a fold-out map of the area.
