A Brief Obituary of Clarence Brown

Born May 10, 1890, in Clinton, Massachussetts.

Died August 8, 1987 in Santa Monica, California.

Schooled in engineering with auto industry ambitions.

Drafted into the army in World War I.

Served as flight instructor for the Army Air Service.

Apprenticed as a film director with Maurice Tourneur.

Co-directed The Great Redeemer and The Last of the Mohicans.

Director of 53 motion pictures, including Anna Karenina,

National Velvet, The Yearling, Ah! Wilderness, The Eagle,

Flesh and the Devil, Anna Christie, Edison the Man,

The White Cliffs of Dover, Intruder in the Dust.

Best remembered as Greta Garbo's favorite director

And for discovering Elizabeth Taylor.

As for the legacy of his work, he commented late in life:

"Let them make what they can of it.

Maybe it means something. Maybe not.

We did our best, usually."
