Praying Mantis

The praying mantis is attracted to gardens, where they may be found on plants, flowers, or other areas where pollinators gather.

This beneficial insect has a triangular head with bulging eyes supported on a flexible neck.

Praying mantises are ambush predators feeding mostly on aphids and caterpillars, but they’ve been seen killing small birds like hummingbirds.

Praying mantises have compound eyes, which are made up of many individual lenses.

In autumn, female mantises lay 50-200 eggs in a frothy substance that hardens into a protective case. The eggs hatch in late spring or early summer.
