Lightning Wood

The wood of a tree struck by lightning is imbued with special powers useful in healing or protection, according to Ozark Folk Magic. “If you’re lucky enough to find yourself some wood from a lightning tree, you can use it to craft a magical fence of protection around your home,” says folklorist Brandon Weston.

More common uses of lightning wood include carving it into toothpicks that stop toothaches, spreading small chips of the wood around a home to keep out vermin, or making it into spoons for stirring healing broths and brews.

“Chunks of lightning wood are also prized as protective amulets, often worn about the neck or carried in the pocket,” says Weston.

Whatever you do, though, don’t burn lightning wood. This will make your home likely to be struck by lightning.
