This annual holiday commemorates the founding of The Republic of Iceland on 17 June 1944. Iceland became a part of the Norwegian crown in 1262 and then was converted to a Danish colony in 1380. When German forces occupied Denmark in 1940, Iceland took control over its own foreign affairs and gradually moved toward complete independence from Denmark.
