Indian Independence Day

This national holiday, observed 15 August, commemorates the India's independence from the United Kingdom in 1947 when the provisions of the Indian Independence Act officially transferred legislative sovereignty to the Indian Constituent Assembly.

This holiday is celebrated with parades, fireworks, speeches by the Prime Minister of India and President of India, and kite flying. Kites were used as a medium of protest during British rule and have since become an enduring symbol of Indian freedom.
