Zucchini Bread Day

Squash at Farmer's Market Online

Not to be confused with Zucchini Day on August 8, this April 25 food holiday celebrates a naturally sweet and moist quick bread made with the native American vegetable that Italians dubbed zucchini when explorers brought it back from the New World.

This is a peculiarly an American food holiday, particularly within the Midwest and Appalachian regions where zucchini bread became a staple due to the prolific nature of zucchini plants and the tradition of home baking.

Zucchini bread recipes first emerged during the Great Depression, when home cooks sought inventive ways to stretch limited food supplies and incorporate homegrown vegetables into their baking. The bread is easy to make, nutritious, and can be customized with various add-ins, making it a beloved treat for many.
