Observed August 19, in the heat of summer in the Northern Hemisphere, this food holiday celebrates a refreshing dairy treat usually served on a cone or in a bowl. Also known as soft ice, this frozen dairy dessert is similar to ice cream but softer and less dense as a result of air being introduced during freezing. It has been sold commercially in the US since the late 1930s .
