Celebrated April 28 as the blueberry harvest in the Americas begins, this food holiday is a tribute to nature’s true blue fruit baked into a doughy, buttery pastry.
The harvest, which lasts from April through September, ushers in blueberry pie-making season, a tradition since the time of America’s colonization.
The first printed reference to “blueberry pie” appeared in the New England Farmer journal in 1829. The first documented recipe for a berry pie (which could include blueberries) was published in the Appledore Cook Book in 1872.
