California Quail
These are ground-dwelling birds
Who would much rather run than fly
They skitter through the brush
Feeding on bugs, leaves and seeds.
Their bellies look scaly like lizards
Brown with white dashes on the sides.
See the black face and chin on the male,
Teardrop-shaped plume on his forehead.
Female heads are tan with modest plumes.
