Harold and the Purple Crayon Gets Real

Created by writer and artist Crockett Johnson (1906-1975) in 1955, Harold is a curious 4-year-old in a bright blue jumper who wields a purple crayon with the power to create worlds simply by drawing them. This beloved classic is being adapted into live-action film for the first time in 2023 by producer John Davis with Carlos Saldanha as director.

Previous attempts to produce a live-action/animation and a CGI-animated film adaptation of the Harold and the Purple Crayon book series have all been shelved, despite multiple screenplays, casting announcements, and storyboards.

Harold and the Purple Crayon was previously adapted into an animated TV series in 2002-2002 with voice acting by Connor Matheus and Sharon Stone, and produced as a short 7-minute animation by David Piel in 1959.
